Design Technology

Lesson time

Students study Design Technology for 2 hours each week. The majority of groups are mixed.

Rotation System

  • In Year 7 & 8 students study all three DT specialisms: Food & Nutrition, Product Design and Textiles Design on rotation. The order of study varies for each class, but all groups study in each area for 12 weeks throughout the year.
  • In Year 9 students can elect to drop one specialism, so they can study their two preferred material areas. This forms part of their mini-options choices that are made in Year 8.

Homework

  • Home learning tasks are set once per fortnight, lasting around 30 minutes. At the start and end of a rotation less homework may be given to allow for transition between specialisms.
  • For Food & Nutrition, students are expected to bring in their own ingredients. Practical cooking sessions are once a week.

Assessment

  • In Year 7 & 8 students will take in-class formal written assessments in each of the three DT specialisms. These will take place near the end of a rotation (November, March and June approx.)
  • In Year 9 students will take formal written assessments in both of their chosen specialisms in January.
