The School Day

The length of the school week at Thomas Keble

In March 2022, the Department for Education (DfE) set out details of the expectation that state-funded mainstream schools should deliver a school week of at least 32.5 hours by September 2023. The 32.5 hour minimum is the time from the official start of the school day (i.e. morning registration) to the official end to the compulsory school day (i.e. official home time). The 32.5 hour minimum includes breaks and lunch times. It does not include optional before or after school provision.

  • The 32.5-hour week is equal to 1950 minutes per week.
  • At Thomas Keble, registration starts at 08:45 and our day ends for students at 15:15.
  • This means each Thomas Keble day is 390 minutes, giving a total for the week of 1950 minutes.
  • We are therefore fully compliant with government expectations.

The timings of the school day at Thomas Keble

At Thomas Keble School, the timetable operates on a two-week cycle, known as Week 1 and Week 2. Each week contains five school days, each of the same length and with the same number of lessons. The timings for each day are shown below. Having a 2-week timetable gives us more flexibility for curriculum delivery. In Week 1, students might have three English lessons, two Maths lessons, and one Science practical, while Week 2 could include less English and more Maths.
