Thomas Keble Students Celebrate Record Breaking GCSE Results!
Students, staff and parents at Thomas Keble School in Eastcombe are celebrating an outstanding, record-breaking set of results in 2018 with 78% of students achieving 5 or more GCSEs at grades 9-4 including English and Maths. This year sees an entirely new grading system being introduced across most subjects with the new grade ‘4’ being equivalent to a grade C.
Headteacher, Julia Maunder said. “We are absolutely thrilled at the level of consistency across all subject areas which has resulted in such fantastic and well-deserved outcomes for all of our students. We take great pride in being an inclusive comprehensive school and to see students across the full ability range achieve so well is testament to the commitment of our school community in supporting all students to achieve more than they ever thought possible. The early indications are that our class of 2018 have performed at an outstanding level with records broken in a number of areas. Over 83% of all grades awarded were at the ‘4’ level (equating to a C grade) which compares very favourably with the national figure of 66% and nearly 20% of all grades were awarded at the very highest grades 7–9.
Students have continued to do well across a full range of subject areas. In English, 86% achieved a grade 4 or above in English Language, compared to 61% nationally, whilst in Maths, 84% achieved a grade 4 or above compared to 59% nationally. To exceed the national figures by over 25% in both English and Maths as well as a number of other subject areas is a fantastic achievement and we are immensely proud of our students.
Both English and Maths have achieved well above the national level of attainment with 80.6% of the 2018 cohort achieving a grade ‘4’ or above in both English and Maths GCSEs. This consistently high standard of attainment reflects some really outstanding individual achievements.
Our congratulations go to all our students who have earned such excellent results this year, despite the changes to the examination system which added to the pressures they faced. Our principle of inclusion at Thomas Keble has ensured that all students, regardless of ability, have received widespread and comprehensive support to stretch and challenge their expectations in order to achieve their very best. I would also like to acknowledge the hard work of staff and parents in supporting our young people throughout their time with us.

We would also like to congratulate our alumni of 2016 who have achieved such excellent A-Level results this year. It is delightful to read their success stories and see so many of them featured in the ‘top achievers’ lists of local 6th form providers. Our warmest congratulations go to them all, including Thomas Schaffner who will be starting Oxford University this year to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics!
