Maths KS4




Mathematics GCSE is studied throughout KS4. The content of the course builds on the content, knowledge and skills developed during KS3.

There are two tiers of entry – Foundation (Grades 1 to 5) and Higher (Grades 4 to 9).

The units studied are as follows:

  • Number
  • Ratio, Proportion and Rates of Change
  • Algebra
  • Geometry
  • Probability and Statistics

Solving problems within Mathematics and other contexts is included throughout and represents 25% of the questions on the Foundation paper, and 30% on the Higher.


Assessment is via three written external examinations taken at the end of KS4 (each lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes); the first paper is non-calculator, a calculator can be used in the other two papers.


The textbooks used to support this course is Oxford Edexcel GCSE Maths in the new 9-1 Maths editions at Higher and Foundation. Pupils are also encouraged to buy revision guides, workbooks and practice papers during Year 11.

There is NO controlled assessment element for Mathematics GCSE.
