Curriculum Map

Term 1: “poetry in stitches” Students will be taught a variety of decorative techniques – appliqué, embroidery, batik, stenciling, printing, tie and dye and quilting. Pupils produce a piece of work based on a poem of their own choice.

Term 2: design and make a cushion cover based on natural form. During this term pupils will learn about fibres and origins of textiles, they will learn to knit, weave and felt to find out how fabrics are constructed. Pupils will learn to use different equipment to produce their cushion cover. They will learn about pattern cutting, bias straps, piping and fastenings.

Term 3 & 4: A practice piece of controlled assessment based on a culture of their own choice

Term 5: Introduction to controlled Assessment and Research.

Term 6, 7 & 8: The majority of these terms concentrate on the completion of the controlled assessment test. To be completed and handed in at end of term 8

Term 9 & 10: On March 1st the pre-release paper arrives in school and terms 9 & 10 will be in preparation for the final examination. Pupils will revise topics during this time.

The units studied are as follows:

  • An external examination (40%) which examines candidate knowledge and understanding of Textiles
  • A controlled assessment (60%). It is anticipation that 45 hours will be spent on this aspect of the course.
