Music KS3


Music is taught through the development of skills in Listening, Composing and Performing. Various concepts will be studied and reinforced, including: music notation; world music; vocal work; keyboard skills; music technology; performing skills and a variety of composition techniques both individually and in groups. Evaluation work is completed at the end of each topic to reflect on the skills and knowledge learnt.

Year 7

  • Rhythm and Notation
  • Around The World

Year 8

  • The Blues
  • Form and Structure
  • Minimalism

Year 9

  • Soundtracks
  • Musical Futures: Skills
  • Musical Futures: Cover Version
  • Musical Futures: Songwriting


For each topic in Key Stage 3, students are assessed against national curriculum level descriptors. Whilst some topics may have a greater focus on one particular skill, all three skill areas of listening, composing and performing are assessed for each topic.
