Non-Exam Assessment (Coursework)

A project based on one of three exam board set contextual challenges (released 1st June in Year 10). Students will research, design, make and evaluate a product.

Weighting = 50% of final qualification

Final Written Exam Paper

100 marks

100 minutes

60% of the exam is timber specialist questions and 40% is core knowledge of all other DT areas

Lesson time and grouping

Students are taught DT for five lessons a fortnight. They are taught in mixed ability groups.

Homework

Homework is set once a fortnight. Homework is a mix of retrieval practice, maths and practice exam-style questions.

Assessment during the course

  • Students will sit some 50-minutes summative assessments in class, every few terms.
  • Year 10 mock (100 minutes) March/April of Year 10
  • Year 11 mock (100 minutes) December of Year 11

  • Students will research, design and cook a menu based on an exam-board set “real-life” scenario.
  • Weighting = 60% of final qualification

Final Written Exam Paper

  • Unit 1 Content
  • A 1 hour 20 minute examination paper. The paper will contain both short and extended response questions.
  • Weighting = 40% of final qualification

Students are taught H&C for five lessons a fortnight. They are taught in mixed ability groups.

Homework is set once a fortnight. Homework is a mix of revision, retrieval practice, research and extended writing.

During Year 10 you will begin an individual coursework project which you will continue into Year 11.

A practical design portfolio is created using a wide range of materials and techniques in drawing, mixed media, experimentation of different fabric and techniques.

Weighting = 60% of qualification

Practical Examination

Year 11 design and make project based on an exam board set assignment. The examination is a ten-hour practical examination which is supported by preliminary studies.

Weighting = 40% of qualification
