Maths
Lesson time and grouping |
Pupils are taught 6 lessons of maths a fortnight (7 in Y7). From Y7 onwards pupils are put in groups based on pathway: A, B or C. A and B pathways start and access the same content, with B groups expected to take more time to focus on consolidation of previous learning. C pathway is focused on consolidation and building on KS2 learning. |
Homework |
Homework is set once per week on the Dr Frost maths website. It is primarily focused on review and practice of the core skills from the previous week’s learning. A lower score on the homework indicates that the pupil should seek further support on that learning (e.g. attending maths club). |
Assessment |
There is a test for each of the 5 modules, used to assess progress on the content covered (and to inform areas for further review). End of year exams are based on adjusted GCSE papers and used to provide a snapshot of relative progress against the GCSE level. This provides the Maths Department with a measure of performance for the learning, but also a measure based on actual outcome. |

Additional information (e.g. trips) |
Maths can be very challenging but should not be a struggle. That is why we run Maths Club, twice a week after school, to provide a relaxed environment to do homework or revise, with maths teachers on hand to help when needed. The overview below shows the KS3 plan. Dr Frost can be used at any time to provide a full detailed course plan and current progress. |

Statistics: averages from tables, scatter diagram, theoretical and experimental probability |
Ratio: multiplier methods for % and using ratio to solve problems |
Algebra: index laws, solving harder linear equations, plot and sketch linear and quadratic graphs |
Geometry: nth term of linear sequence, corresponding/alternate angles, interior/exterior angles in regular polygons |

Number: problem solving with bounds, Fibonacci and quadratic sequences and calculations in standard form |
Statistics: using tree and Venn diagrams to calculate probabilities, interpret scatter diagrams. |
Ratio: solve direct and indirect proportion problems, solve pressure, density and speed problems |
Algebra: starting with quadratic equations, equations of linear graphs, investigating different graph types, solving inequalities, solving simultaneous equations |
Geometry: solving shape problems based on circles, Pythagoras’ Theorem, proof using congruent triangles, loci problems, and using vectors. |
