English

Lesson time and grouping

Year 7 pupils have 6 lessons a fortnight. Year 8 pupils have 7 lessons a fortnight. Year 9 pupils have 6 lessons a fortnight. From Y7 onwards, students are taught in groups Y, X or Z. Students in groups Y and X are mixed attainment classes, allowing for all students to be supported and challenged. Z groups are smaller groups, often with teaching assistant support.

Homework

Homework is set once per week and will focus on prior learning, revision and spelling practice. Regular practice of key words will improve students’ understanding of our covered topics and support them in expanding their vocabulary.

Assessment

There is an assessment point for each module throughout the year, used to assess progress on the content covered (and to inform for areas to review or to address misconceptions). Year exams are based on adjusted GCSE questions which allows students to become familiar with the format and signpost to the teacher areas that need to be readdressed. This provides the English Department with a measure of performance for the learning, but also a measure based on actual outcomes.

Additional information (e.g. trips)

As well as English lessons taught by a specialist teacher, we provide each year group with a reading hour once a fortnight. These lessons focus on reading for pleasure, and we hope that this is a chance for our students to enjoy some quiet time with a chosen text. Our librarian is very knowledgeable about fiction and non-fiction texts and can provide guidance in choosing a book.
