Modern Languages KS3

Pupils are taught basic language structure which leads to further study through a variety of topics including personal details, family and relationships and leisure. They follow the Oxford Equipe Nouvelle course in French and the Zoom course in Spanish. These resources are supplemented by a wide variety of other language resources developed by the department.

The units studied are as follows:

Year 7

All pupils study French as their first foreign language in year 7. Pupils have the opportunity to visit France during activities week in Year 7.

Year 8

In Year 8 pupils in the top 3 sets have the opportunity to learn Spanish during one of their five lessons per fortnight. At the end of Year 8 pupils who have performed well in both languages are given the opportunity to continue with Spanish in Year 9. They can choose to study French only, Spanish only or both languages.

Year 9

In Year 9, those pupils who study both languages have a timetable of 3 hours of French and 3 hours of Spanish per fortnight. Pupils continuing with French only have 5 or 6 lessons per fortnight, and those continuing with Spanish only have 6 lessons in order to develop their linguistic skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking. At the end of Year 9, pupils can opt to continue studying either one or both languages in Key Stage Four to GCSE level, according to the languages learnt in KS3.
